Assertive communication is a key professional skill for pharmacists, particularly for locums who frequently work in unfamiliar environments and may face competing demands, time pressures, and challenging workplace dynamics.
This workshop will provide a practical and supportive space to explore:
- The role of effective communication in maintaining professional standards and patient safety
- What assertiveness means in practice, and how it differs from passive or aggressive communication
- The impact of assertive behaviour on confidence, decision-making, and workplace relationships
- Practical techniques to communicate clearly, set boundaries, and handle difficult conversations.
Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on real-world situations, build confidence in their communication style, and develop strategies they can apply immediately in practice.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Explain the importance of effective communication in supporting safe and professional pharmacy practice
- Differentiate between communication styles, including passive, assertive, and aggressive approaches
- Demonstrate understanding of assertive communication techniques, including setting boundaries and expressing concerns clearly
- Apply assertiveness strategies to common workplace scenarios, particularly those involving pressure, conflict, or risk
